CHAPTER TEN

Bridge and Doug finished drying off as they grabbed cups of coffee at the break room in the station. Mrs. Miller and Bubba were in the office with Mayor Sasha and Bridge’s father, describing the local flood she remembered from her childhood. Jessie had helped Mrs. Miller dry off and gave her a cup of tea while they waited for the mayor.

“Are we going back out in the boats?” Doug asked as he warmed his hands around the coffee cup.

“I’m figuring not. Everyone in the valley is accounted for.” Bridge grinned as he moved closer to the life guard. “So, how was our second date?”

“Another romantic boat ride in the flooding water.” Doug smiled back. “Accompanied by a rather large German shepherd and a rather small Annie Oakley.” He rested a hand on Bridge’s left cheek. “You devil, you.”

Bridge lifted his hand to pull Doug’s over for a kiss on the palm. “If you think this is romantic, wait until I take you home for a meal. With my parents and all the siblings.”

“Be still my heart.” Doug smiled at the deputy. He reached the other hand up to push the damp curls off of Bridge’s forehead. “If we were at your place…”

“Yeah.” Bridge pulled away, still holding Doug’s hand. “But we’re not. I’m surprised we were left alone this long.” He squeezed the hand he held. “Later.”

Doug watched the deputy leave the break room. The feelings he had for Bridge were much different than he’d ever felt for any man before. And this was only after two days. God knows what he would be feeling after a week.

“Bridge. Do you want something to eat?” Doug called. “There are sandwich makings in the fridge.”

“Sounds good to me,” was Bridge’s answer.

The voices in the main room started discussing food. Doug opened the refrigerator and looked for the bag of food they had brought from Bridge’s home.

“Hey, Doug, forget I said that. Something better just got here,” came from the front.

Doug walked out of the break room to see Bridge holding the front door open for his mother. She had an old fashioned picnic basket on her arm. Bridge’s youngest sister, Beth was holding a cooler as she followed their mother into the office.

“What are you two doing out in this?” Bridge took the basket from his mother as an Austin officer grabbed the cooler. They were followed into the break room by the others currently in the office. The two returned to hear what Bridge’s mother had to say.

“Your Aunt Betty didn’t open the store today, even though it’s not near the water. So, Beth and I thought we’d cook something before the power went off. And we had perfect timing. The last piece of chicken came out of the oven just as the electricity failed.” Michelle turned to Jessie Cactus Flower as she hung up her wet hat and coat. Beth hung hers next to her mother’s.

“Your husband said to tell you the kids made it to your parents’ house.
